YOGHURT SMART SHOPPER TIPs

For the Kenyan shopper, smart shopping, especially on a budget, could be a more tedious task, considering the fact that the nutrition information on most of the brands is questionable. Have you ever tasted yoghurt and all you could sense in your mouth is the sugar? I experience this every time I purchase yoghurt from the Supermarket! Almost all 'affordable' brands to the local Mwananchi are loaded with too much sugar, including the ones labelled 'With Natural Fruits'.

Why add too much sugar yet you've used natural fruits? Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), you need to do your job ASAP to save us all from Diabetes! Well, at least the few who still don't have it. I'm saddened by the fact that every time I read Kenya Demographic Health Survey findings, Diabetes prevalence is always higher than the previous year. Main contributor, garbage in our Supermarkets and Grocery stores in the name of food!
Follow our simple recipes for smoothies and milk shakes to minimize your sugar intake. Simply buy natural unsweetened yoghurt and blend-in fruits. Check out more tips below:
  1. Read the nutrition information on the packaging and understand it. Most labels give calories, sugar and other nutrients per 100grams or ml. You need to multiply that with the total weight of the product. E.g. If the product is labelled 150 calories per 100 grams or ml; for a 500 ml packet you need to multiply that by 5. Which means you are ingesting a total of 750 Calories!
  2. Check out for healthy bacteria (Probiotics) used to ferment the yoghurt. E.g. lactobacillus acidophilus. (Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. They help keep your gut healthy.)
  3. Look out for artificial flavorings. Anything labelled ‘flavoring/flavor’ is NOT the real thing. Very few yoghurt brands in the Kenyan market have real fruits.
  4. If you’re losing weight, go for unsweetened yoghurt and watch out for the number of calories
  5. The most unfortunate thing is the fact that 99.99% of the yoghurt brands in the Kenyan market for budget shoppers are Mini-Sugar factories and have artificial sweeteners.
  6. Buy Natural unsweetened yoghurt then blend-in real fruits. This will save you from ingesting dangerous cancer-causing ingredients and excess sugar that will make you obese or add unnecessary weight.
  7. For Low-Fat brands, check out for other additives like sugar and artificial flavors. Most low-fat products usually contain more artificial sweeteners, flavors and sugar to improve their taste. These could actually be more harmful to your health in the long-run compared to the fat you're trying to avoid!
